Child labor is one of the darker sides in the history of U.S. capitalism. It’s not often discussed, but in 1900, “18% of all American workers were under the age of 16” (History.com) Over the years, the need for children to work, especially in factories has significantly declined. And one of the ironic benefits of the Great Depression was the shortage of jobs pushed children out of the market, giving more opportunities for adults to work and the kids to get schooling.
