Every parent should be wary when a three year old shuts his door.

This morning my nearly three year old son Oliver lured our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Robin, into his room and shut the door.

“What are you doing in there?” I asked.

“Play with Robbie. No open door.”

I left them to it, and a few minutes later Oliver came running into the kitchen, bare-bottomed, and speaking very quickly. “Clean up just a little bit. Just a little bit of poo. Yea, just little bit. Need wipes.”

As one, my husband and I both glanced at his little potty which was sitting innocuously by the table. “You did a poo?” David said. “In your nappy?”

Oliver stopped and eyed us for a moment. Apparently satisfied with whatever he found, he announced cheerfully, “On ground! Show Robbie how do poo. Do pee in container.”

“Oh really? On the ground?” David said, with a quaver that was either despair or laughter. As David explained that we don’t poo on the ground, Oliver led him to his bedroom, to show off the trophy.

But on opening the door there was no poo to be found. Only a little dog, licking his lips.
