The last thing I thought I’d ever make was a card game. A fucking card game, but I guess what that’s why you’re reading this, so let’s start at the beginning, gloss over the shitty parts, and reach the grand finalé (Is that spelling right? I don’t really know, I dropped out of high school.)

This is Jordan’s face zoomed up real close so you can see just how funny he is.

8:23pm — September 20th

My friend Jordan called me with an idea: a multiplayer, laugh-out-loud card game for people in the tech industry that’s similar to that really popular, multiplayer, laugh-out-loud card game for normal people that everyone already plays.

As big fans of that game, laughing, and the tech industry, we embarked on a quest to make a card game — something none of us knew or currently know how to do.

The next night

We came up with a few good cards and a lot more crappy ones. Things were off to a half decent start but we had a ways to go. That’s how you’re supposed to do startups right?

We started getting a little funny.

After about five hours of non-stop play, we realized we weren’t shipping software anymore and had to actually figure out how we’re going to actually ship pieces of shiny paper to people across the country.

Much to our dismay, there is no Stack Overflow for making board games, so we enlisted the help of our good friend Jeremy who has always been great at literally building things.

Left: Me doing the 🤔 face. Right: Jeremy wearing a startup shirt, drinking coffiest, and using a Macbook Pro. Basic.

With the team in place we just needed a name.

We iterated for a long time.

Almost bought some .af domains.

Started dropping letters from our name.

Read some Paul Graham articles.

Started tweeting about the project.

We were stuck, until we realized we were literally disrupting cards and had absolutely no imagination whatsoever.

The next week

We worked tirelessly adding new cards, refining old ones, and playing a ton of games with a ton of amazing people (Do check them out at the end of this post).

These hands make you want to buy the game right? Buy it. Please. We have a burn rate.

We were feeling pretty good about things that we decide to launch it the next week.

We even fell right into the stereotype of self congratulating even before we achieved anything.

One week after that, almost three weeks since we started.

Here we are.

We’ve sorted out all of our beautiful packaging, hilarious (annoying) copy, and shipping in a weekend. We’re ready to show off Disrupt Cards to the world.

Even the Silicon Valley team loves us.

This image is totally real.

Buy our stupid game.

or check us out on Product Hunt.

A Special Thanks

To all of the amazing people who helped play the early game, suggest cards, and just be awesome people.
