Starting Fresh

My most precious loved one and I are moving into our new home —freshly built — in a quiet neighborhood not far from our jobs. It’s a fresh start for both of us after ten years of “adventures” and roads less traveled, and I’m more than ready to settle down, grow some roots, and start a family.

There’s something enchanting and amazing about the prospect of owning a home. I look forward to decorating the walls and scouring antique stores for old furniture. The excitement of finishing the basement and building ourselves a workshop is almost maddening.

Ten years of tiny bedrooms and decrepit apartments, not to mention sleeping in strange places and misadventures with our cats have taken their toll. Once I considered this life too “adult” for my liking, and here I am, a decade older and ready for a house with a white picket fence and the requisite 1.6 children.

More than that, in these last years, I’ve learned a lot about myself. About the kind of person I am, anxious and mildly autistic, and far too awkward for decent conversation. I prefer the quiet corners of a room to loud and deafening conversation. So this is my chance to make a change, whatever that might look like, to put together the puzzle pieces of this life into a future. For myself and the people I love — especially the one who’s walking this road beside me. Especially for Mage.
