Focus Now, Play Later: A Father’s Timeless Wisdom to His Daughter, Now a PhD
The world needs what’s inside of you.
In a time where distractions are everywhere — social media, peer pressure, and the constant rush for instant gratification — it’s easy for teenagers to lose sight of what truly matters: their future. But sometimes, all it takes is one letter. One voice of love and wisdom to anchor us to our purpose.
In January 1998, a devoted father from Ghana, wrote a handwritten letter to his daughter Peace, who had just returned to boarding school. He encouraged her to stay focused on her studies, not to neglect any subject, and to strive for excellence. “You really need to work harder for all As,” he urged. “There is nothing like playing for this one year. Those who have been taking your time, put them off.”
His words weren’t harsh — they were full of hope, belief, and deep care. He reminded her of the purpose behind her education: qualifying for university and setting herself up for success. He noticed her improvements, acknowledged them, but lovingly pointed out where more effort was needed. He didn’t just critique — he offered support. “I do promise doing all that I can for you,” he wrote. “I want you to also promise to do all that I want from you.”
