A Peek Inside INCLUDED

INCLUDED provides a baseline of essential opportunities to migrants living in urban slums. We do this through one-stop-shop community center platforms, what we call a Community in a Box.

Organizations have many founding moments and this is one of them for INCLUDED. After nearly a decade of experience in migrant slums in Asia, we are decentralizing into a global network of social enterprises that are linked together in pursuit of inclusive cities for migrant slums.

The incoming CEO will work closely with the founder and board to transition the organization structure and operating model. With the restructure, we’re employing a lean headquarters model at first with only a few key staff until the network catches hold. Candidates for this position will have an entrepreneurial mindset and will take on ownership to move INCLUDED to the next level of impact.

Mandate

  • Purpose. Partners with the founder and board to ensure clarity of purpose and strength of culture throughout the organization.
  • People. Ensures the right people are in the right place and then manages that team’s energy and rhythm.
  • Product. Ensures clarity and simplicity of programmatic approach.
  • Profit. We don’t make it but ensure sufficient resources for the organization.
  • Champion. Serves as a champion for the cause of slumdwellers and as a champion for the partners in the network.
  • Simplicity. Ensures simplicity is prioritized throughout the organization. Simplifying things down not to stupidity but down to their essence.
  • Essence. Distinguishes between the extraneous and the critical.

The CEO leads the organization’s overall performance, effectiveness, and operations. They ensure clarity, alignment, and resources across the organization. They manage the core team and work with the founder and board of directors, while also serving on the board. This position is based in San Francisco and the CEO will build out a lean international headquarters in the city (what we call the Mothership). The aim is to end up with a lean organization that has wide impact across the network platform. Ultimately, the CEO will build the engine which energizes and drives INCLUDED’s purpose.

The CEO will partner with the founder and board to lead the transition of the organization into INCLUDED 2.0, particularly over the first 6–18 months. The founder (also the chairman) will support the growth of the organization and the CEO by providing strategic direction, relationship development, and recruiting and encouraging partners in the network.

There is a focus on reducing friction in two ways.

  • Reduce friction for slumdwellers to get a baseline of essential services so they can better design their lives, their communities, and their cities (Purpose)
  • Reduce friction for partner organizations to accomplish this (Community in a Box product and organization support)

Experience

  • Leadership experience in a similar type of network organization
  • Solid fundraising experience
  • Solid teambuilding experience
  • Solid operational experience

See the INCLUDED Chairman role for more context.
