#5 - Figuring Out Your Style and Building From It

The first screen made with my new kit

A couple days ago I posted about the photography shirt I made to advertise the business that I love. I kept looking at those designs as the emulsion on the screen dried, as I was hooking up the printer, and right before I pressed print on the bottom design I decided this was a dumb idea and I was going to hate the end result. So I went back to the drawing board. I looked at the logo I have now on my site, I looked at what I’ve done in the past, and I called myself an idiot. My logo and my designs don’t reflect myself or my style at all.

I went back and looked at my work and the people that I look up to and I wrote down three words that I thought represented me: Simple, Bold, and Technical. My work is simple in the sense that it’s usually done on a seamless paper background. Portraits of Color, Blacksheep, and my new project Warpaint are all what I would consider bold. And my work isn’t very artistic; it’s creative, but I don’t cross any boundaries into what I would call artistic photography (and that’s okay).

Simple - Bold - Technical

So I made a design that’s simple and bold as hell that I can print on pretty much anything and get my point across. I usually feel very narcissistic wearing a shirt with my name on it, but it gives me an official feel which I can’t complain about.

How many people do you know who have their own shirts?

Bonus image of the screen and test on my reflector bag! The ‘PHOTOGRAPHY” part wasn’t letting ink through to the bag, but I fixed that issue after testing it the first time.
