Mental health for all of us is a day-to-day battle. It is not one that features key battles, it is something that is tested and every day in which we inhabit this amazing planet. For children, it is a tougher battle as they do not have the wisdom of experience to guide them.

This is where families step in but as we know, not every family is perfect. Troubled families leave children vulnerable and isolated. This is where teachers fill in the gaps. They provide emotional support where none else exists. In a time of crisis, such as the one in which we are inhabiting, they are keyworkers, wearing many different hats.

The Scale of the Problem

‘Mental health problems affect about 1 in 10 children and young people. They include depression, anxiety and conduct disorder, and are often a direct response to what is happening in their lives…

…Alarmingly, however, 70% of children and young people who experience a mental health problem have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.’
