Valentine’s Day
Ballad of the Sandhill Cranes
A love poem inspired by a species that mates for life
Where palm trees frame the evening sky,
The Sandhill Cranes’ tale unfolds.
On silent wings they sweetly fly,
‘Crost shades of mauve and palest golds.
Carried aloft by faith, hope, and love,
A smile, a kiss, a vow we told.
Soaring high on wings above,
In violet, blue, and deepening gold.
When winds grow strong, and wave tops steepen,
The cranes stand true and firm and bold.
Like sunset colors, love will deepen,
And lightly touch the darkening gold.
For love is patient, and love is kind,
Never failing, never old.
Like sunsets serve us to remind,
The purplish blue and deepest gold.
Happy Valentine’s Day, my darling Mary Ellen.
Our love never fails.
