’tis the season for shopping! and God knows life is made 100 times easier by online shopping…if the experience is mindfully designed. Here are quick things to keep in mind if you are designing an online shopping app.

1. User Feedback for each action — Wiggles, colors and pops!

it doesn’t have to be fireworks or over-the-top animation. Just a matter of changing color or a small motion of toggle icon on user action will do the trick. It comforts the user by showing that something happened when they tapped. Elements respond to their touch.

2. Don’t hide things just to minimize — add, pay and DONE!

A good UI perfects the balance between what is visible and what is hidden. what do users have to do to filter a list? how many taps?

sometimes, the UI allows you to save users the trouble of too many actions. For example; show all the filters without any user action on devices that allow it. What works for mobile does not necessarily be best for tablet or desktop.

I honestly love www.amazon.com

3. Know what you are selling — sizes and colors for apples?

While a unified experience across the app is what designers usually strive to achieve, it pays to think about the product. Maybe you should add a product details page for clothes for example, but not fruits. And you can add conditional formatting to the product card or name to indirectly communicate its interactiveness.

For example, this is how you do it in Bubble

4. Show don’t tell — this comes in 8 colors? am I supposed to imagine them, then?

don’t tell me that this shirt comes in 3 colors, show me pictures of it in all 3 colors.

5. Cart visible or one click away at all times

If your user is shopping online, you need to anticipate their need to access their cart for a glance or to complete the checkout at any point in the shopping journey. Therefore, the cart should always be one tap away AND you should provide a direct link to cart every time an item is added.

check how users have the option to continue shopping or go to cart at all the right times in a shopping journey

That’s all :)

I used amazon.com and Sefamerve which are two online shops that I really enjoy shopping at to write this post. What are your favorite online shops? Please share!

‘Till next time! Lots of love and #keepdesigning
