Why do we see what we see? Why do we define what we define? Why do we feel attracted to the people who glance over, around, through us? Why do we raise our eyebrows in response?

Why do we smile? Why do we smile when we’re elated? Why do we frown when we’re sad?

Why does sugar turn into energy? Why can’t we absorb energy from the sun? Why do we see yellow as yellow?

Why don’t we understand the complexities of being human?

Why do we rest? Why do we draw our curtains and find comfort in the dark — in our isolation?

Why do we keep track of what day we met — what day we were hurt the most — what day we made someone cry — what day we lost our way — what day we found something we’d lost?

I remember how the stories would start — with a look off into the distance.

No, wait —

this is how it happened.
