This past week, I was in Greece at a conference with people from all over the world.

In our midst were Spaniards, Greeks, Germans, Syrians, Algerians, Moroccans, Koreans, Peruvians, Scottish, Lebanese, Jordanians, Americans, French, Colombians . . . the list goes on and on.

There were only 47 of us at the conference, but we covered the entire world.

On our last evening, we had an international singing night. Everyone was invited to participate, preparing songs in their native language or in the host language of the foreign nation they call “home.”

For over an hour, we went up to the mic, one after another. We led the group in singing songs from around the world.

Sometimes we were just listening to the lyrics. Other times, we tried to phonetically follow the foreign words projected on the large white screen in the front of the room.

It was beautiful, a woven global tapestry stretched across that sea.

Did you know that today is “World Singing Day?”

I didn’t know that until I saw my writing friend, Jason Edmonds, post a writing prompt called “Sing” in honor of “World Singing Day” on October 15.

World Singing Day is a world-wide sing along!

Each year on the 3rd Saturday in October, people all over the world gather in groups of all sizes to sing all kinds of songs to celebrate our common humanity. Everyone, from shower singers to celebrities, can sing. And that includes you.

World Singing Day

So today, I encourage you all to listen, to sing a song in your language or in a foreign language.

Here are a few to get you started in my story, “Listen With Me to the Cultural Sounds of Music.”

What music could you sing today, in your native language or in a foreign language? How can you join the “World Singing Day” and celebrate our humanity and unity?
