Dear friends,

September is here! In India, it is just another day of the school year because the new term starts in April. In other places, like in Canada and the US, most of us have already started school or are going back after the long weekend. With this change in season, I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the last few months.

Spring is about birth and growth while I think of summer as the time when we flourish. The sun is at its full power and the days are longer. There is energy in everything! My summer felt this way too.

A Teacher’s Hat grew so much, thanks to you. I interacted with many teachers on Twitter and I am blessed to be surrounded by a fantastic team of educator writers.

Thank you :) ; Photo by dylan nolte on Unsplash

With that thought in mind, let’s take a look at August 2018:

  • I explored Brain Rules and how we can use an inquiry mindset to implement some of them in the classroom. If you haven’t grabbed the poster yet, get it from here.
  • I wrote about the educational theories and best practices behind gamification. I highly recommend Karl Kapp’s course on Lynda.com. Alicia and I would be happy to discuss gamification with you anytime!
  • August 1–14 were Hive Summit days organized by Michael Matera. Take a look at the amazing reflection that came out of it.This was my biggest writing project so far because I worked with 7 educators to make this article happen!
  • Melissa wrote about #OneSmallThing, a simple way to remember the goals we want to achieve.
  • Robyn, in her debut article for A teacher’s hat, reflected on The Wild Card by Wade and Hope King. Have you read the book?
  • Following up on his Professional Learning Communities article, Aaron told us about how he helped build one such community and the leaders it has produced in his school.

For September, we are looking to explore gamification of the Math classroom, the Dive into Inquiry book, among other teaching and learning topics.

There is much that we want to write about but our students are our priorities now that summer is giving way to fall.
