This is a 15 min strategy that can be used at the beginning of a new topic to gauge the prior knowledge of students about it or at the end of a topic or beginning of next class to recap the topics covered previously.

Prompt: Give the students an idea, some words, or a question that you have covered or will be covering.

Think (5 min) — Individual Work: Allow the students to think about the prompt and note their thoughts somewhere. This should be done without the help of any other material. That is the next step.

Research (5 min) — Individual Work with resources: After writing down what the students know about the prompt, they can now refer to their textbook or an online resource to validate and add to their ideas.

Share (5 min) — Group Work: Now students will share their notes with a peer and add to each other’s knowledge.
