There is no exact way to classify the ‘musical’ American Idiot. Although it is a musical, it is more of a rock opera in that there is very little dialogue. The show opened at ASU Gammage Tuesday night with a bang. A talented cast brought the music of Green Day to life with a slight musical theater edge. From the intricate stage to the rapid onstage costume changes, the show was phenomenal. At certain points, a character would have to put on or take off clothes, but instead of running off stage or removing themselves from the spotlight, the choreography worked in the costume change to make it seem as though it belonged.
Each cast member had a great voice and wasn’t afraid to show it, from solos to group songs, the music filled the theater and the crowd was mesmerized. The show is definitely filled with controversial topics such as teen drug use, sticking it to the man and sex. Although all subjects are covered, the way the music brings to light the issues and follows the lives of the teenagers as they grow is tasteful and interesting. As the show progresses, it changes from a light hearted ‘lets have fun’ attitude to one where friends lose contact, some understand the problems drugs can have and others join the army. Based in today’s society, it creates a very real feel, showing news clips at the beginning on the screens mounted to the set. It is a show for anyone with an open mind, but be forewarned that there is language and adult content in the play.
