With Hurricane Sandy looming, most venues cancelled shows and lots of restaurants closed up shop, but one that was still filled with smiling faces was the wonderful World Cafe Live. Smells of their delicious food filled the air as the men of Kingsfoil, Cold Fronts, and Commonwealth Choir sound checked and rocked out on the Upstairs Live stage.

The evening began with an interview with Craig Almquist (guitar and vocals) and Alex Smith (drums) of Cold Fronts. Clad in pink sunglasses and a furry hat, Alex was ready for Sandy while Craig wore the t-shirt of one of his favorite bands, Helix. Click here to see what they had to say.

Following the interview and a cup of Cranberry-Apple tea, Commonwealth Choir took to the stage. For the first time in a while, it was a band I had not heard at all before coming to the show, but they were a pleasant surprise. With the venue, a rainy evening, and their classic indie rock sound, it made for a great opening set. Although no EP has been released yet, plans for one are in the works. In the meantime, check out the band’s facebook Facebook or Twitter to learn more.

After an interview with Kingsfoil during the set change, Cold Fronts took to the stage and it was time to see what they were made of. Joined by other band members Jacob Hammill and Dylan Hammilll, the band kicked off the set with high energy beats and a great sound. During the interview, one of the words lead vocalist and guitarist Craig used to describe their sound was raw. Although they were plugged into amps, I would agree with the description. The edgy sound to their music carried the indie rock vibe through from Commonwealth Choir’s set. Having fun on stage, the band made sure to thank the venue and Kingsfoil for having them out to open the show. After their 30 minute set, it was onto the headliners.

It’s always nice to see a band who watches the opening acts and sets up their own equipment. So, as the men of Kingsfoil moved their equipment to the front of the stage with the help of some of the other bands, I couldn’t help but smile. Around 9:30, the stage was set and it was

time for the band to rock the stage. Since drummer Frankie Muniz only joined this past April, their set consisted mostly of newer songs, but still featured some of the classics. Their set was high energy; and although lead singer Jordan Davis made jokes about the fact that it wasn’t raining and there was almost no wind, he made sure to let everyone know to be safe getting home and, along with the rest of the band, expressed his gratitude to each person for coming out. Midway through the set, Jordan played “Giving” solo on the piano and then brought the band back out to play the remainder of the set with even more energy than the first half. Playing more songs from the latest album, A Beating Heart is a Bleeding Heart, the crowd enjoyed the remainder of their evening.

Following the show, all the bands stuck around to chat with family, friends, and fans who wanted to say hi, grab a photo, or grab a copy of the free lyric poster the band had. Since it was the final night of tour, it was bittersweet for the guys, but they made sure to let everyone know they would be back on tour again soon.
