The Dunwells — Review & Interview
Sometimes, a band is so talented you can’t help but just sit and smile as they play to a sold out crowd. On a nice Sunday evening in Arizona, I went to one of my last three shows before leaving for college. This one just happens to be an new venue, the Musical Instrument Museum, which I had explored before, but never seen a show at.
Prior to the shows start, I had the chance to watch the band sound check before we did our interview. It was probably one of the coolest moments of the night: an empty room and a band so pitch perfect that you didn’t know how they didn’t have a bigger following. Making their way to the United States from Leeds, England; these brothers, cousins, and friends have only done two US tours and are already playing festivals like Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza, and even landing a spot on Jay Leno last week. Although their Lollapalooza show was cancelled due to a weather warning, the band walked down the street and ended up at a nearby Hilton with a grand piano and at 4:30pm, when they were supposed to play for thousands, they played to a small 50 person crowd in the hotel.
Their show in Arizona began with a quick introduction from MiM staff, and shortly after, they took to the stage. All five members sang beautifully and their voices worked together to create pitch perfect harmonies. The crowd, although mixed of people from all different ages, responded with rounds of applause concluding each song and looks of awe during. They played some of their more well known songs as well as some others that might not have been as familiar, but by the size of the line to buy an album and get it signed after, the crowd definitely enjoyed the music. Their cover of Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek” during the acoustic portion of their set was fantastic; not only was their singing great, but their instrumentation was also phenomenal.
