There are certain musicians I could see a thousand times and still not get bored of their set and ZZ Ward is one of those artists. Not only that, but her tour support is consistently fantastic so I can always expect a great show all around. On yet another freezing night in Philadelphia, the Last Love Song tour was warmed up and ready to kick off at the Theater of the Living Arts.

The night began around 8 p.m. with Chicago based The O’My’s. Their 30 minute set was a compliment to the soul that ZZ would bring to her set later in the night. What I’ve really noticed with ZZ’s tours is that the two opening bands always compliment her style, but are different from each other. The six piece band filled the stage with their larger than life personalities and variety of sounds and songs. The set provided a nice introduction to the band and started out the evening exactly as it should have started.

Next up was Grizfolk, a 5 piece cast of characters whose music was an unexpected surprise. The band had more of a rock vibe with some pop beats sprinkled in delivering a simply perfect sound. There weren’t any gimmicks, there was no trying to be someone else, the band just played their music and played it well. They shined as bright as the lights behind them and left the growing crowd even happier and ready for more music. Having just released their EP on Tuesday, they were excited to share some new music and they hung around to meet fans following their set.

Finally around 10 p.m., it was time for the one and only ZZ Ward to hit the stage. Like previous tours, the stage had more of an open feel with drums raised in the back along with a piano and three mic stands spread across the front of the stage. Clad in a furry black jacket, jeans, and one of her many hats, ZZ took to the stage with her usual swagger and was ready to kick off what looks to be another great tour. With favorites like “OVERdue” and “Blue Eyes Blind,” there was plenty of energy to kick off the set. Fans danced and as usual, the hour and thirty minute set flew by so fast that before anyone was truly ready, the show was over and the tour was off and running. From acoustic moments to moments packed with so much energy you couldn’t help but dance and jump around, the show was everything I had expected and more.
