“You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.” Matt Damon’s words of inspiration to Colin Ford apply to any situation and it was truly an accident that I went to see a screening of We Bought A Zoo, but sometimes accidents are where you discover the best things in life. What I soon found was this film is not some cheesy kids movie meant to have some lines that humor parents and keep children interested. It is a story based on reality and shows that life isn’t always peachy. After the death of their mother, the Mee family must find new direction in life. Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) decides to move his family, daughter and son, to a new home “9 miles from the nearest Target.” What first becomes laborious as they discover the land is a zoo in need of renovation, turns into a place of growth and happiness. Throughout the film the family must face the daily challenges of money, caring for animals, and dealing with emotions. Dylan Mee (Colin Ford) is the older brother who feels that his father no longer loves him while Rosie Mee ( Maggie Elizabeth Jones) is the younger sister who is too cute to handle. Both children learn to take on responsibility and care for each other as the story progresses.
All the actors did a wonderful job bringing this inspiring true story to life and although there is a bit of language in this film for it only being PG, I would highly recommend taking any teenager to see this movie!
