Four birds transferred to the Conservancy

By Joanna Fitzgerald | Director of the von Arx Wildlife Hospital

Four chimney swifts were among the 83 animals admitted to the von Arx Wildlife Hospital at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida this past week.

The lead wildlife rehabilitator from the Peace River Wildlife Center in Punta Gorda called seeking assistance with three chimney swifts she was caring for at her facility.

Chimney swifts are a difficult animal to successfully rehabilitate. She had heard from other rehabbers that we were successfully raising swifts and wanted to see if she could transfer her babies to our facility.

We immediately agreed to help.

A plan was made to transfer the three sifts the following day. Before the transfer happened, Peace River received a fourth baby swift from a rehabilitator in Arcadia.

The four baby swifts were in good condition upon arrival at the Conservancy and are continuing to thrive while being cared for in the nursery.

All rehabbers do what they can to help other rehabbers. Everyone shares a common goal which is to do what is best for an animal in need. Along with taking the swifts, we also provided info on our protocols for raising swifts so she could understand how our treatment protocols differed from hers. Sometimes, incorporating new techniques into a treatment plan can mean all the difference and lead to a successful release.
