Multiple animals admitted after car strikes

By Joanna Fitzgerald | Director of the von Arx Wildlife Hospital

A purple gallinule was among the 41 animals admitted to the von Arx Wildlife Hospital at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida this past week.

The purple gallinule was found in the road in downtown Naples after being struck by a vehicle. When admitted the gallinule was unable to stand, had an increased respiratory effort, blood in its mouth and showed signs of head trauma. Hospital staff cleared the gallinule’s airway and placed the gallinule on oxygen in an animal intensive care unit. Treatment and handling were kept to a minimum until the bird’s condition was stable at which point pain medication was administered.

A radiograph revealed the gallinule had suffered two fractures. The fracture sites were well aligned and required minimal splinting to stabilize. Currently, the gallinule is receiving daily pain medications and an antibiotic, Chinese herbs, supplemental feedings, electrolytes and laser therapy which eases pain and promotes healing.

The gallinule is one of several animals admitted this week after being struck by vehicles. Keep a box and towel in your car so you are prepared in case you encounter an injured animal. Having the proper rescue equipment available means you will be able to offer assistance in a timely manner. Always call the wildlife hospital for guidance if you are unsure of how to safely help an animal in need.
