Some of my favorite books under several coiled binders of my writing and notes from the last seven years. Photo by author, © Dawn Nelson.

Sometimes the hardest task to accomplish is to not mess up a good thing.

It can be easy not to realize how good you have it until something or someone comes along to compromise the whole equation. Suddenly you realize how idyllic it all is and that you need to protect what makes it so.

Fiercely.

There are mornings when I wake up and consider the challenges of the day and tell myself to fight. To fight to preserve our lives and our home. That I need to keep fighting and persevere, especially when against the odds.

So I do.

One of the sustaining forces in this endeavor is that I write.

Sometimes I tell myself I am writing my way to freedom. Whether that will ever be financial freedom remains to be seen, but writing brings about a certain kind of intellectual freedom that is priceless. It is a freedom of expression that brings a sense of empowerment.

I can choose to write about anything. Anything at all.

I often choose life stories and weave thoughts on life lessons into the narrative. Some of it is frivolous, but oftentimes it is not.
