Misconception

“Everyone in my family is very serious I can’t but keep cracking jokes. I started my comedy career in primary school to get money by making people laugh and happy. It was the school authority that gave me the opportunity of getting paid for cracking up students and teachers, it soon got big, so big that I had a show fixed for every Friday, in school”_Uche Ogbuagu, 2011 State Chief Comedian, Imo State, Nigeria.

For lack of knowledge a lot of comedians, including you, too, perhaps, tend to believe that they are: 1. Fools. 1. Idiots. 2. Stupid. 3. Dummies. 4. Talkative. Well, a common jester can be any of these, except a charismatic comedian. Why? A fool is a guy that does silly things. He’s childish. But a charismatic comedian, even to save his life, can’t afford to put his foot in his mouth.

Such practical joke lacks value and general appeal to all kinds of people. Instead of fooling around, you can do creative things to provoke positive laughter.

Be creative, don’t be silly!

An idiot is some one that is stupid, lacking in judgment or intelligence. He cannot be said to be sensible at all. A charismatic comedian is the opposite of this: he’s sane. Stupid is an informal word for annoying. What is stupid is capable of pissing people off.

If you drive your audience up the wall each time you perform, good job you seek your fortune elsewhere. Perhaps you’d better off as a bouncer.

Stupidity is synonymous with idiocy. The word dummy is used to describe mock copies of something. A charismatic comedian, however, is original. Hellen Paul, a comedienne popularly known as Tatafo, for instance, says her jokes come naturally; she’s not a clone of some queen of comedy. Whatever she unleashes during her performances is her brainchild.

Talkative people usually shoot their mouths off. A charismatic comedian doesn’t talk the hind leg off a donkey. If you must talk a lot, you talk sense. And if you must talk nonsense, make it sensible.

There’s method in madness, you know.

Remember we are talking of making money here. So, rather than talk a load of rubbish, talk what will make people laugh well. A charismatic comedian is rather a JESTER, JOKER AND HUMOROUS INDIVIDUAL. He’s permitted to be a jester because in the past jesters lived in palaces and courts amusing kings and queens. You gift can take you that far today — Aso Rock, White House, Kremlin — if you hone it.

A humorous person is witty and amusing: he makes you laugh. That is the focus of a charismatic comedian. To be witty is to be amusing in a clever way. So, be witty! Be creatively funny.
