Why New Year’s Resolutions are doing more harm than good?

It was 7th June 1893. A train started its journey from Durban to Pretoria (South Africa). A young lawyer purchased a first class’ ticket, boarded the train and occupied a seat. While he was sitting comfortably, a European came with a railway authority and the lawyer was asked to move to the 3rd class compartment. Puzzled, he questioned, “But I purchased a first class’ ticket. I will not go.” Hearing this, the railway authority threw him out of the train near Pietermaritzburg. Humiliated and insulted, he spent his entire night at the railway station. This night was not a usual one. It questioned his existence and his purpose of life. And this gave birth to the legend who is known to the world as Mahatma Gandhi.

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” — Mahatma Gandhi

A few days back, the whole world was drowned in the New Year celebrations. A huge number of people made their new year resolutions. To my amazement, the statistics show that most of the resolutions are broken by the end of Jan itself. Strange! But very few may question, “Why?” And my response will be, “Why not!” On the surface, the whole world is riding on the wave of New Year. But internally, we know, “It’s just another day! Nothing has changed. I was stuck yesterday and today, things are no better.”

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was thrown out of the train on 7th June. He didn’t wait for 1st Jan 1894 to take a resolution to become a legend. No! He started his journey.

“Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” — Winston Churchill

The desire to transform oneself is an attitude, which needs to be cultivated internally. And it is independent of the external factors such as a date. “What if we broke our resolution the very first day?” Remember, failure is not fatal, its a learning. Rise and start again. No one but you yourself can stop yourself from starting. The biggest power we have is the power of now. It’s now or never. Every day can be your new year and you can have a new year resolution every day. After all, it’s just a date. Successful people don’t wait for dates to transform the world. They bring the change, and the world remembers the date.

“Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.” -Robert Schuller

So, what are you waiting for? Start now! You have the power of now! Begin your journey and transform your inner world.
