Hi there, it’s Sofya again. Let’s spice things up this week. Instead of looking at each app separately, I want to point out cool things in the proccess of making one thing with 3 apps. So let’s dive into some photo editing apps.

Is this heaveeeeen or is it just a whiiiiite woman’s instagram © Bo Burnham’s Inside special

I’m gonna do some fun stuff with this pretty autumn photo I took in October. Well, I have a particular definition of fun.

App #1: Focos

*Available on iOS

Focos is a photo editing app powered by AI. It computes depth of your photos and allows you to control your aperture. To put it simply, to make parts of your portaits blurry and make it look natural, like it is done with a professional camera and lens.

First thing you do, is of course, pick a size of your aperture, to define the desired depth. It is all easily done with a simple slider, and you also see the aperture value for those who know a desired number of an effect.

This is where it gets really interesting. The “field” of the focus of your photos is displayed by a colorful highlight. And you can reposition it! Simply changing a point of focus with a slider is amazing.

There is more! Your photo becomes this 3d object you can control the lighting of. Change the intensity of the surrounding light source, here it is sun.

Here, it is even possible to make extra light sources. Put them anywhere you want, change its color. So many opportunities.

They have many more exciting tools, but I wasn’t able to test them due to them being premium festures :(

Cool app though!

Let’s see how we go from Focos to what I made with the pic in the next app.

App #2: VSCO

*Available on iOS and Android

A classic for some may be unknown for others. VSCO is my long-time favorite. First of all, I can’t go without saying how much I appreciate the polaroid detail deeply. Many of their presets are analog-camera looking, so it works super well for them.

I won’t go too deep into, let my just say:

  • It’s super easy to get into
  • You can do amazing stuff even with the free presents
  • All settings are super clear to understand and accessible
  • Great, consistent style
  • Amazing iconography

They also have a platform within the app where you can share your photos and find community, I was just never into that. The image turned out good, couldn’t expect it to be any other way.

Now let’s add some text to make it a cool insta story.

App #3 GoDaddy Studio (ex. Over)

*Available on iOS and Android

I know, it’s basically a graphic design software, but I’ve long known Over to be a photo editing software where you can play around with graphics!

First thing when you choose a base you can pick a format of where you will b posting it right away. Appreciate the thought a lot!

When you picked the text tool you can pick the font right away or at the text input screen. There is a large variety of fonts in free version, from cute serifs to bold grotesks.

What blew my mind is the curve tool. It usually takes effort to curve text, and here its done just like that. With a power of a slider. On your phone. It’s crazy! And it curves both ways!

If you want to place your object in a particular place, you can nudge it where you want it. Blend you layer how you want, make it transparent, make it small. A lot of freedom in this app!

The level of definition of working with text is awesome. You can control orientation, line spacing and kerning. It allows to make something really complex right on your phone. Cool stuff!

And here is the final product. I like how it turned out and it was pretty simple to do for me. Yes, having a complex tool where you can do all at once is nice, but softwares like this usually have really steep learning curve. Maybe a tool for each task isn’t such a bad idea.

This was 3-A-A-W-#3. As usual, please DM me on twitter if you have any app recommendations.

Tune in next week to see which 3 apps I will review. Have a good one!
