Broke. Entitled. Angry.
Future generations are lingering for freedom
Remember playing solitaire, coming home to dial-up internet or getting your first Nokia? What were once considered amazing and exciting inventions, are now taken for granted by teens. Millennials grew up in the midst of the digital revolution, resulting in a relationship with tech. We’ll leave it in the middle whether or not that relationship is healthy though.
However, little kids grow big. As Millennials enter their prime spending years something strange happens. This new generation is not undertaking life-stage landmarks (marriage, kids, mortgages) like all the generations before them have done. Instead, Millennials massively turn to the adventure of travel.
Some staggering facts
The Millennial generation, born between 1982 and 1997, is one of the largest generations in history. China already has about 400 million millennials which is more than the total population of the United States and Canada combined. In sense of travel, they already make up for 40% of all leisure travelers who book online. While smartphones play an essential role role in the act of decision-making for many consumers, millennials are leading the way in mobile shopping and buying. A staggering 41% of Millennial travellers use their smartphone to shop for flights. While only 25% of people over 35 years old said the same. About 66% of the Millennials think they can find the same flight and hotel information searching on their mobile device or a desktop computer. In short, 66% of all Millennials are perfectly comfortable planning an entire holiday on their smartphone.
Experience is everything.
All is Instant
They don’t think twice about booking a flight, hotel or restaurant online. This is not even a demographic phenomenon but a shift in our whole culture. It establises a foundation for generations to come and changes the way previous generations act too. The future of travel is tech; enabling more options, more adventure and more freedom, all instantly with a click on the button. Just think about how the past 10 years changed so many markets. What boxes can you tick?
- Instant taxi
- Instant food
- Instant BnB
- Instant.. airline ticket?
Millennials want it all and they want it NOW.
International vs Domestic
A whopping 80% of Millennial travellers prefer to explore international destinations over domestic locations. Making the most of their time overseas, 50% of Millennials plan to tick off multiple cities in one trip. Thanks to visa schemes such as Schengen, city hopping is a breeze for travellers with a thirst for seeing the world. Also noted European destinations are a firm favourite amongst travellers of all age groups, followed by the United States and New Zealand.
So…
- Millennials travel A LOT
- are used to buying their tickets through mobile.
- want it all and they want it NOW.
- value experience and freedom in life
