Grown up with internet, smartphones and even drones, generation Z or “Gen Z” is the first generation to be raised by modern technology. At first glance this generation looks a lot like Millennials but there are some key differences.

Global and realistic, Generation Z knows what’s going on.

Focus

Used of having fast and instant technology with highly optimised funnels, Generation Z has an easy life. Where Millennials experienced the rise of computers, internet and mobile technology, Generation Z was brought up with UX/U optimised applications, instant messages and fast internet. Due to all these technologies, Generation Z might have shorter attention spans than Millennials. Did you know that the attention span of this younger generation is lower than that of a goldfish? True story.

Multitasking

Millennials were raised with lesser distractions than Generation Z. Today, technology has changed the way we live and interact with other people. A carefully constructed SMS has made way for multiple fast messages on WhatsApp, Facebook provides you with most of your daily content and Google saves you a day of study in the local library. Generation Z has learnt how to do all these activities within the same minute. They are the masters of cross-platform multitasking.

Bargains

The recession made thick scars in the frame-of-reference of Generation Z. They’ve been brought up in times of recession and are far more careful where they spend their hard-earned cash. Millennials however are less influenced by price and have a deeper motivation to pursue their ideals.

Go-getters

“Why is school necessary?” This question is being asked more and more in classrooms around the world. The new generation probably gets more information from Google in 60 minutes than the previous generation did during their first half year. Generation Z are less dependent on traditional education as they often feel that they can learn more from field experience and the internet. Expectations are that this Generation moves more/faster to work than school. Can you blame them with current prices for traditional education? Alternatives on internet have proven themselves useful already.

Expectations

Generation Z turns the table concerning brand loyalty.

“When it doesn’t get there that fast they think something’s wrong,” said Marcie Merriman, executive director of growth strategy at Ernst & Young. “They expect businesses, brands and retailers to be loyal to them. If they don’t feel appreciated, they’re going to move on. It’s not about them being loyal to the business.”

The world is small

Internet gave the Millennials the reputation of being the first global generation. But as technology is increasing and trade unions are growing, Generation Z takes over. This true global generation thinks, relates and interacts on a global level. 58% of adults (35+) worldwide, agree that that “kids today have more in common with their global peers than they do with adults in their own country”.

A quick overview (Source)

Generation Z was born in the hands of technology. As technology advances, humanity will adapt, resulting in a new way of living and exploring.
