We spoke with Ronnie Barnett of The Muffs in Episode 10, and it was Ronnie who tipped us off to Kim Fox.
And we’re so glad that we heeded his suggestion — Kim Fox was just great to chat with.
Growing up in New York City, Kim somehow had developed a love for the Midwest. As I’m someone who grew up there, it seemed perplexing… but then isn’t it often the case where people dislike the place they grew up.
Kim got to fulfill her dream of exploring “The Great Midwest” when she found herself in Bloomington, Indiana recording her debut album for Dreamworks Records, Moon Hut.
Produced by Paul Mahern, the record captures both Kim’s unique songwriting talent and her voice. And like so many albums we have run across on Abandoned Albums, Moon Hut sounds just as good today as it did in 1997.
Rob Janicke and I talked to @kimfoxmylife about her career, her Lilith Fair experience (you will be shocked, I promise), her career pivot, and about her upcoming new work with Linus of Hollywood (he produced her sophomore album 2003’s Return to Planet Earth).
The record was largely ignored upon its release in 1997, and that was a mistake. Who can say why some artists get seen and heard and others do not. It’s the furthest thing from a science, but that doesn’t stop people from attempting to create formulas to crack the code.
The fact that Fox and Mahern eschew any kind of formula is what makes Moon Hut still sound refreshing and unique. I can assure that Kim Fox is an artist that is worth re-visiting.
