Aberdeen Harbour Board is Britain’s oldest business established in AD 1136 when King David granted the Bishops of Aberdeen the right to levy a tithe on all ships trading at the port; the spires were a useful as they could be seen from sea.
The cathedral of St Machar, was started 500 years or so earlier where river loops in the shape of a Bishop’s crozier. Despite various local references to the saint there is little or no information about him.
It was only completed in 1953.
