Why Do So Many Songs Centre on Change? And Why Is Change Hard?
The fear of the unknown imprisons us in stagnation
Change is lonely. Growth is lonely. Healing is lonely.
I’ll let you into a little secret: I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. But one thing I do know is that I need to make some changes. Some more changes.
Most of us don’t embrace change with open arms. We don’t invite her in, in celebration and vigour — until we have to — because change is destabilising.
All too often, change only happens when the pain of not changing supersedes the pain of changing.
And as the pioneer Henry Ford said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” In other words, as per another well-known quote previously attributed to Albert Einstein, but apparently he didn’t say it, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
Enigma’s song Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi! sings of a perpetual change that happens on a deep level. Perhaps a subconscious level. A change that can’t be seen with the eye, but must be felt with the heart. Like a constant shifting of sands.
Things are changing
But nothing changes
And still there are changes.
