3 Must See Shows This Week
Art shows you can’t miss this week in New York City. We pick only three.
1. Michael Heizer at Gagosian Gallery
May 9 — July 2
Often working outdoors to create his famously large-scale, monumental sculptures or land artworks, Michael Heizer’s works are inherently hard to view and impossible to transport. Gagosian Gallery has gathered a series of Heizer’s rarely or never-before-seen early paintings from the 1960s and 70s. The exhibition of his two dimensional works demonstrates an investigation of space and a utilization of raw, natural materials that Heizer would expand upon in his later works, but within the more accessible context of a gallery setting.
On view at Gagosian Gallery, 555 W 24th St.
2. Robert Motherwell at Andrea Rosen Gallery
May 1 — June 20
From a distinctly academic and worldly background, Robert Motherwell became a founding member of the New York School of abstract expressionism, which aimed to develop abstraction within a distinctly American context. Marking the centennial of Motherwell’s birth, Andrea Rosen Gallery will display his renown Open series, in which each work features minimal colorization and three charcoal lines. The series exemplifies the highly cerebral content that Motherwell represented throughout his career.
On view at Andrea Rosen Gallery, 525 W. 24th St.

3. Tabor Robak at Team Gallery
May 3 — June 7
Team Gallery’s solo exhibition of Tabor Robak will include 4 new CGI works from the new media artist. Robak creates his multidimensional video collages and images from the media that fills our lives: smartphone backgrounds, desktop screen savers, mobile games. He elevates these images and forces us to examine them — how familiar they are and how important they’ve become to us, consciously or not.
On view at Team Gallery, 83 Grand St.
