New Exhibits from Philippe Parreno & Tacita Dean

1. Philippe Parreno @ Gladstone Gallery
March 5 — April 16
For his current exhibition, IF THIS THEN ELSE, Philippe Parreno has taken over both Gladstone Gallery’s 21st street and 64th street locations. The show — the artist’s first with the gallery —is a characteristically Parreno exhibit in that it fully immerses its audience in a multi-sensorial experience of consecutive events: film screenings, changes in lighting and shifts in room temperature. One event triggers the next to surround the audience in a unique and utterly sensorial experience.

2. Tacita Dean @ Marian Goodman Gallery
March 2 — April 23
“…my English breath in foreign clouds,” Tacita Dean’s new show with Marian Goodman Gallery, includes a wide variety of works — from films to photography to new drawings. The pieces pull from Dean’s experience as a British artist who recently relocated from Berlin to Los Angeles. Her works draw upon differing cultural, sociological and especially geographical features between Europe and America: “What surprised me most about Los Angeles was the one thing I had imagined there would be little of and that was clouds. These clouds differed from their European counterparts because they were nearly never gray but extremely variable and white.”

3. Lizzie Fitch & Ryan Trecartin @ Andrea Rosen Gallery
March 22 — April 16
Interested in expanding the experience of video art beyond the screen, Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin have turned Andrea Rosen Gallery into a series of “sculptural theaters.” These “theaters” are installations that use architectural, audiovisual and sculptural elements to “expand onscreen content into environmental panoramas.” Thus the gallery is not only a platform for the artists’ new video works but also an immersive environment in which once can encounter them.
