About me

Hi there! My name is Gavin. I have an M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. My main research examines how language and culture shape human relationships with threatened species and places, with most of my work focused on Hawaiian green sea turtles in Hawai‘i. There, I explore how tourism and conservation influence how we think, feel, and act around these incredible creatures.

A little more background: My Ph.D. training is in sociocultural linguistics, with specializations in intercultural interaction and environmental communication. In short, my research explores these 3 basic questions:

  1. What stories do we tell about our relationship to the natural world?
  2. How and why do we tell these stories?
  3. Do these stories help or hinder our collective ability to address the environmental challenges of our time; what destructive stories dominate, and what alternative stories could we be
