About Me — John Bullock
Several Medium posts have informed me that I have should have an about page on my profile, so here it is!
My name is John Bullock, I am freelance content creator, YouTuber, fiction writer, and proud father careening towards middle age with all the grace of an inebriated giraffe.
I studied computers in college (which was long enough ago that “computers” was something you could study in college), and followed that up with two decades of never working near a computer. Not once.
I have worked managing the refreshment kiosks in a 25,000-seater football stadium, I have worked in an iron foundry, I have repaired automatic transmissions for a living, and I have done a lot of welding and metal fabrication work.
All the writing, music, and game development stuff was on my own time. If you’d like to see some of my work on Medium, you can skip on down to the bottom of this post.
This is how I pay my bills, feed my child, and buy new keyboards. I like keyboards. I’ve been doing this full time for over a year now, covering all the typical bases, from content mills to revenue-share websites and, of course, direct clients.
A few years ago I started a YouTube channel making game development tutorials. I’ve never really pushed or promoted the channel, but I have put regular content on there for the last couple of years. According to recent YouTube metrics, my subscriber count puts me somewhere in the top 30% of all YouTubers (which required far fewer subscribers than you might expect), so that’s cool.
I’m incredibly scatterbrained when it comes to interests and projects, but fiction writing is probably the closest I have to a main passion. I have a few pieces out in the world, but they’re just the tip of an iceberg, peeking out from my hard drive.
Incidentally, I now have a dedicated page for keeping track of fiction I publish on Medium;
There’s not a lot to say here. I make music with a friend. We do it for fun. You can find it here.
I love boxing and tennis, and while I don’t follow all the leagues or know players’ names, I can generally sit and watch any sport with a ball in it.
Except for golf.
̶I̶ ̶a̶m̶ ̶a̶ ̶1̶s̶t̶ ̶K̶y̶u̶ ̶(̶o̶n̶e̶ ̶g̶r̶a̶d̶e̶ ̶a̶w̶a̶y̶ ̶f̶r̶o̶m̶ ̶b̶l̶a̶c̶k̶ ̶b̶e̶l̶t̶)̶ 1st Dan (the first of 10 black belt grades) in Shukokai Karate, and I take boxing classes, but they won’t give me a belt for that one.
I love science fiction and fantasy novels. I adore Terry Pratchett and Tom DeLonge. I watch too many terrible movies from the 70s and 80s. And the 90s.
And the 2000s.
My partner won’t let me have a “Freebie” list, but if I did, it would just be Jennifer Connelly’s name repeated over and over.
Sometimes I share too much, and I’m terrible at ending blog posts.
