Aaron Paulson here, “here” being a compact house in the rural suburban part of Nishi West Tokyo.

A few items, for the record:

I was raised in Canada and think of myself as Canadian, eh, but here in Japan where such questions are taken more seriously (“But where are you from?”), I self-identify with the Swedish side of the Paulson clan.

I left my hometown Toronto almost thirty years ago now. In successive leaps, my wanderlust and lifelong dream of adventure took me first to Montreal for grad school, next to Korea for a GAP-year type ESL teaching gig, and finally a permanent relocation to Japan.

Though I have no problem with being identified as my wife’s “partner” instead of husband, or included in a generic “they,” I use he/him when asked for my pronouns.

I sometimes go by the screen name ‘tokyoaaron,” though it hasn’t caught on outside a few discussion forums… Sadly, unlike our pronouns, we don’t get to choose our names, nick-, porn, rap, or otherwise.

Currently, it feels like I am at the tail-end of what will amount to a thirty-year teaching career. I’m still in an International school, but…
