As I was trying to find a picture of myself for this article, I realized that I don’t have many photos of me taken by someone else. I prefer to take selfies or just take photos of other people until a cat passes and it becomes the new subject. I guess now I don’t need to mention that I’m a cat person.

I’m Alesa. This was the high school nickname that got stuck with me. Although, I would very much like to be called Aly nowadays or the ‘Scribbling Worm’. Yes, I like associating myself with cute—not so creepy — crawlies. I like to imagine myself under an oak tree wearing a straw hat while writing a poem about how The Velvet Underground and Nico changed my life.

Before writing on Medium last year, I started several projects like The Kanagawa where I post poems on Instagram along with some artsy photo editing. At that time, I was working at my first job as an electronics engineer. Now, I’m studying for my master’s in a related discipline while working as a freelance writer.

I know that writing and engineering are very contrasting fields but to be honest, I’ll choose writing or an artistic pursuit any day. Aside from filling up my drafts with poetic gibberish, I enjoy taking photos of the sky, laughing at memes, singing along to rap and hip-hop, and occasionally dancing to Britney Spears.

• Back in the Philippines, I own around 10 cats and three dogs.
• Some of my favorite albums right now are The New Abnormal by The Strokes and Orca by Gus Dapperton.
• Some of my favorite movies are the Before Trilogy, I Origins, Her, and Amélie.
• I’m currently reading 1984 by George Orwell.
• I love eating Neapolitan wafers while watching skate videos.
• I’m obsessed with making playlists on Spotify.
• I plan to publish my own poetry book.
