Welcome to My Midlife “Crisis”

I haven’t always been a writer. A lifelong reader, yes. A talker? Definitely. But a writer? Not until recently.

My favourite hobby is, has always been, and hopefully will always be, reading. I loved reading as a child. I read so much that my parents had to put some rules in place: for example, I was allowed to read while eating lunch, but not at the dinner table. Some of my best childhood memories involve summertime, a book, and my family.

The only personal writing I did for most of my life was writing in a journal. I didn’t love writing in school, but I didn’t hate it either. I was good at it, but it wasn’t a hobby for me. I got better at writing when I started my degree in the late nineties and early 00s. I got quite good at writing essays; good thing, because my major was English and my minor was History, so there was a LOT of writing involved. But that wasn’t writing for pleasure by any stretch.

At some point during those four years, I decided to become a teacher. Teaching was never a childhood dream for me. I never knew that I was going to be a teacher; for many teachers, it is a lifelong calling. For me, it was more logical.
