About Me — Amy Lee Kite
My recent playlist on Spotify includes Kendrick Lamar and Frédéric Chopin
From being a mom of three to writing poetry to publishing children’s books on tough topics, I certainly wear many hats. I love the flexibility and freedom that comes with not trying to fit into a conventional category … as a writer, as a music lover, as a mom, as a dog owner and as a human.
I remember feeling confused decades ago about this dichotomy — about the fact that I could be more than just a suburban, upper middle class girl. Who was I? Who did I hope to become? What labels did I unnecessarily apply to myself?
After my father died, I was speaking with a therapist and struggling with who I was. I was telling him that I’m not sure if I identify more with being a priviledged North Shore of Chicago girl or a tree-hugging, mountain loving girl. He replied, “You can be both.”
It sounds so simple, but it was a life-altering statement for me to absorb. I didn’t have to fall into any specific category. I didn’t have to simply one day become a suburban mom who coordinated carpools and devoted her life to her children. Instead, I could be a suburban mom who writes dark poetry and who is slightly displaced because she feels pulled towards the mountains. That works!
