About Me — Avishek Ghosh
My Journey as a Self-Made Data Stack Developer
Introduction:
Hey everyone, I’m Avishek Ghosh, a Data Stack developer based in Kolkata, India. As a self-taught enthusiast in Data and Analytics, I’m deeply passionate about exploring this field. Beyond my professional interests, I love diving into new ideas through reading and am an avid participant in water sports like swimming, as well as long-haul cycling. I view life as a journey of continuous exploration and learning, and I’m excited to share my insights, learn from yours, and maybe even solve a few problems along the way.
My Journey:
Growing up, I was an average student with no hint of hidden talent. However, I was always brimming with questions… lots of them. My goal wasn’t merely to learn but to truly understand. Through the trials and tribulations of adulthood, my sense of starry-eyed wonder, insatiable curiosity, and passion for problem-solving have managed to endure, shaping the person I am today.
I didn’t kick off my tech journey with a formal computer science degree. I actually started my career in Business Process Services (BPS), which was a far cry from data science and analytics. But my interest in technology was always there, simmering in the background. I was fascinated by the elegance of coding and the way technology could solve problems. In my spare time, I dove into data science, took online courses, and learned through hands-on experiments. Slowly, coding started to feel like playing with Lego blocks, becoming a way to tackle real-world challenges. I consider myself an “interestingness hunter-gatherer” (fancy term, right? Thanks to Maria Popova). Whether it’s exploring a new dataset or diving into a philosophical concept, I always find myself eager to explore and learn something new.
What I Want To Write About on Medium:
That journey — from being a Business Process associate to a self-taught developer in Data & Analytics — isn’t just motivational fluff. It’s filled with practical lessons, missteps, granular nuances and strategies that I had to figure out for myself.
On Medium, I intend to share what I’ve learned from working in Data Science, Data Engineering and Business Intelligence. My focus is on practical, hands-on experiences — solving problems that textbooks and courses often overlook. I want to help others navigate the real-world challenges of tech, while also learning from the feedback and conversations that follow.
In tech, we build on each other’s knowledge. I believe in giving back to the community by sharing insights that others might find valuable, just as I’ve learned from those who came before me.
You can also look forward to my personal essays on a range of topics that have sparked my interest. Whether it’s reviews of important books, fresh ideas, films, or anything else that’s caught my attention, I’ll share my thoughts and reflections.
A Transformative Trip:
I haven’t traveled much, but one experience stays with me — my time in Melbourne in 2017. I lived there for three months on a work assignment, and it was more than just a professional milestone. Melbourne was a city of warmth, inclusion, and beauty that stole my heart. I learned as much about life and culture as I did about analytics. And don’t even get me started on the coffee!
Looking Ahead:
So, that’s me —a curious kid turned data explorer. If you’re into tech, love a good challenge, or just want to explore stories about the absurdities of life, follow me on Medium and drop me a line. Who knows? Maybe we’ll end up solving the mysteries of the universe… or at least figuring out why our code won’t compile.
In the grand scheme of things, we’re all just data points trying to make sense of this crazy algorithm called life. Let’s explore it together!
