When Columbine happened, I was an eighth grader. I mostly wore black clothing but occasionally sported a navy and gray with smidges of color.

I hid in my clothing and behind books. I sat in the back row as often as possible and talked to very few people in my classes. Mere weeks after the Columbine massacre, my friends were teasing that I’d be the next school shooter. After all, I read only Stephen King books, made dark jokes, wore black, and kept to myself.

Profiling much?

I have a dark sense of humor, and my mind can go to the most morbid places, but I don’t have violent tendencies.

Why start this bio with a bit about a horrible moment in U.S. history? The year Columbine happened, I realized how unsafe schools were.

The following year, I went through the worst bullying of my life. I was afraid to go to school for a while because the girl wrote me a death threat.

Two years later, 9/11 happened.

Columbine, the death threat, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks happened during my formative teen years. These events and people’s responses helped shape my views about humanity and formed my ethics.
