About Me — Cendrine Marrouat
From France to the Canadian Prairies…
Hello everyone!
My name is Cendrine Marrouat. For those who wonder how to pronounce it, here is the answer: “san-drEEn mar-wah”. (No “t” at the end, please. ;-) )
Born in Toulouse, southern France, I spent the first decade of my life in Surgères, a small town on the Atlantic Coast, before moving back to my birth city with my mother.
You can see many photos of Toulouse here.
I fell in love with English in high school. I was so passionate about the language that I decided to become an English major. I hold a BA in English-to-French Translation (which is actually considered a Master’s Degree in France). The subject of my thesis? A translation of the first two chapters of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Austen remains one of my favorite authors to this day.
My initial goal was to be an English teacher in France. But I found the national teaching exams too difficult and exacting. Like a majority of my peers, I failed—more than once. In 2003, I had had enough of the competitive atmosphere, of studying 12–14 hours a day, and hearing professors telling us that “teachers are the elite of the country.” I wanted to see more of the world, meet new people and cultures, and stop feeling like a professional student. I set my sights on Winnipeg, Canada, and moved there a few months later. I have never looked back since!
I am the proud mama of four fur babies: Ginger and Teddy (tabby cats), Gus (Jack Chi), and Pepper (Terrier mix).
Yes, they are as mischievous as they look!
Where I Have Travelled
France, of course! But I have also visited quite a few interesting places, including Syria, Hawaii, Alaska, Italy, Greece, Spain, the UK and several Canadian provinces.
As a nature photographer, Canada is pure heaven. I could spend days in forests and parks near my house…
