About Me — Charlene Annabel
Born on the sunny island of Singapore, I’ve always been the kid who’s slightly more tanned than her peers, a goody-good student to her teachers, and a girl next door as my friends would come to describe me as.
A Travel Lover
Growing up, I’ve had my fair share of travelling to various parts of the world, particularly the South-East Asian region and down under. My parents made it a point to travel as a family once every year.
Even as a child during then, I was always amazed at how tiny my presence mattered in an enormous world. The culture, food, historical landmarks, tradition, and well preserved scenic places fired up the child-like curiosity in me that there and then, I aspired to be Columbus; venturing into territories I’ve never been.
Travelling has always been a source of comfort away from the complexities of life. It’s a magic portal that transports you to another dimension, and for a moment, you forget all your worries back home; living life as it should be. That power to connect with the world defines a part of me — a girl who’s ever seeking adventures to quell her insatiable hunger for worldly experiences that I could only fulfil for as long as I live.
A Book Worm
In an Asian household, making sure your child grows up to be intellect is a given. Naturally then, books of different genres filled my shelves (though occasionally, when we’re out shopping for books, I’d slip into the cart a few horror storybooks.)
Even till this day, I still use books as a means of escapism — from the stillness of life. It’s an excellent way for me to unwind from a day’s worth of hustle and to gain a myriad of knowledge from admirable authors.
In summary, I’m someone who prefers using my time to learn, grow, and expand my perspectives. Some of my favourite influential figures include:
- Bill Gates (an avid reader who recommends thought-provoking books)
- Barack Obama (a genuinely knowledgeable, inspiring, and charismatic leader)
- Yuval Noah Harari (an independent thinker who brings about perspectives you probably haven’t thought before)
A Gamer Girl
Yes, I’m a massive nerd for games as well! As a child, I spend most of my time gaming with my dad — from computer games to console games; you name it, we have it. More often than not, my favourite part of going to the mall would be geeking over the latest video game releases or the Xbox.
Psst, here are a couple of fun facts:
- I built my gaming computer from scratch
- I still keep a collection of most gaming consoles since my childhood days — even the ancient Game Boy that powered on cartridges
As a girl, you’d probably think I play more feminine games such as The Sims (it’s more popular among women), but for some reasons, I like Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed better.
Hopefully, this gives you a glimpse of who I am. I’m still working towards the dream of fulfilling my desire to travel the world even though I’m in my early 20s.
Whatever the future path may be, I’m embracing its uncertainty with a blend of curiosity, genuineness, and an open mind.
