About me — Dale Thomas
Okay, me me me, here we go!
I am a middle-aged British man living in Nara, Japan with my wife and two wonderful Border Collies.
I have been a programming nerd since I was 10 years old when I got a second-hand Spectrum 48K computer and a basket of pirated games for my birthday. I taught myself to program because of my passion for games and computer graphics.
In high school, I wanted to become a fantasy illustrator, but that didn’t work out so I went to university and got a degree in Cybernetics (robotics). After that, I got a Master’s degree in Evolutionary Algorithms (using evolution to solve engineering problems). I spent several years in Zurich as an Artificial life researcher, a few years at Osaka University as a robotics researcher, and then eventually wound up in game development in Kyoto.
I’ve worked on a fair number of games, but my most notable achievement was making the background waves and music visualisers for Sony’s Playstation3.
