About Me — Deya Bhattacharya
New fiction writer, who dis?
So I’ve been writing on Medium a while, and I figured it was time to introduce the human behind the lengthy rants on why literary fiction is awesome and how not to be yet another boring, consistency-is-key creator. I’ll spare you the “I’m not good at intros” spiel — no one is, neither am I, but here we are all the same, and I owe it to you to try.
So, hey! I’m Deya Bhattacharya. I’m 29, and I’m from Kolkata, India.
I was born in the States, but moved back to India as a little girl. I’m an only child, and I was the picked-on kid in school for most of my growing-up years, so from a very early age, I learned to be content on my own. I’d read a lot of books, write, draw, sing, play with my stuffed animals and railway set. Later on, as an adult who’d live on her own for long spells of time across multiple cities, I’d be grateful for my ability to keep myself happy.
After high school, I did my Bachelor’s degree in Economics. It wasn’t my first choice, but it’s what my parents wanted me to do, and when Asian parents order you to do something, you kind of have to do it. It wasn’t bad, though — I made a lot of friends in college and developed some much-needed social skills. The real bummer was B-school, which I absolutely did not want to go to. Sadly, Asian parental tyranny won…
