Greetings, I am Dinushi Gamage, a fifth-year medical student in Belarus. I’m originally from the dynamic island of Sri Lanka, and I’ve always been interested in learning about people, their lives, their challenges, and the science that unites us all. I see medicine as a means of bringing humanity and healing together, not just a career.

I was up surrounded by a culture that values kindness and tenacity. As I make my way through the demanding and fulfilling world of medical school, these principles have served as my beacon. However, my path isn’t only about becoming a doctor; it’s also about discovering my identity, finding balance, and pursuing my creative dreams.

Learning Abroad: A Life-Changing Journey

One of the most important choices I have ever made in my life was to study abroad in Belarus. It has been difficult and rewarding to leave the comforts of home and start an adventure in a different nation.
Although it was initially intimidating, acclimating to a new culture, language, and temperature taught me to be resilient and adaptable. I challenge myself every day to venture beyond of my comfort zone and welcome the chances and difficulties that come with relocating to a different region of the world.

I now have a worldwide perspective on life and healthcare thanks to my medical studies in Belarus. I’ve also learnt to value the little but significant things that bring me back to my roots, like a warm cup of tea, a kind remark from a complete stranger, or a call from my loved ones. My affection for Sri Lanka has grown as a result of these encounters, and I am now even more determined to use my degree to support my community in the future.

Why Medicine?

My journey into medicine began with a straightforward but thought-provoking query: How can I have a long-lasting influence on someone’s life? I was always fascinated by the human body as a child and was frequently found with my nose in a book. Eventually, this interest developed into a purpose: the desire to help others and improve my community.

As a medical student, each day has its own set of difficulties and victories. There are times of self-doubt and hard learning, but there are also times of realization and contentment. Throughout it all, I’ve come to understand that empathy — knowing the person behind the patient and treating them with kindness — is just as important to medicine as science.

Beyond the White Coat

Even if medicine plays a big role in who I am, it’s not the complete picture. Outside of school, I’m really passionate about writing. I believe that words are incredibly effective means of communication, connection, and transformation. Writing enables me to express ideas that are frequently unsaid, impart knowledge, and reflect on life’s experiences.

My goal is to inspire and educate people by fusing my knowledge of medicine with storytelling. I’m making the first moves in that direction with the aid of Medium.

Lessons Along the Way

The importance of having self-compassion is among the most significant lessons I’ve ever learnt. It’s easy to be hard on myself since I’m always trying to be the best. But as time has gone on, I’ve come to understand that growth comes from accepting mistakes, growing from them, and overcoming them.

Being a medical student is a difficult life, but it has taught me the value of balance: striking a balance between hard work and relaxation, ambition and mindfulness, and science and art.

Why Medium?

My creative outlet has always been writing, and Medium gives me the ideal platform to reach a worldwide audience. I selected Medium because it encourages genuine narratives, creates deep connections, and provides me with the chance to gain knowledge from a wide range of authors.

Medium is more than just a publishing platform to me; it’s a place where my thoughts may be heard, where I can participate in stimulating conversations, and where I can develop as a person and a writer. I want my work to inspire, educate, and have a good influence, whether I’m discussing health-related themes, thinking back on personal development, or delving into subjects like mental health and self-care.

Looking Ahead

My objective is to build a life that combines education, creativity, and meaning while I pursue my career in writing and medicine. Whether it’s with a pen or a stethoscope, I want to use my abilities to help people.

I appreciate you taking the time to learn more about me. Everybody has a story to tell, in my opinion, and I can’t wait to share mine with you on Medium. Together, let’s connect, grow, and learn.
