About Me — Expat In UK
Sri Lankan Expat living in the UK
Hi there! Welcome to my About Me story.
As the profile name suggests, I am a Sri Lankan expat living in Scotland, United Kingdom. I am also a privacy-conscious person, hence the pen name. For me, it is easier to express myself more freely when my audience doesn’t know me.
I’ll start from the very beginning. I grew up in a suburb in Sri Lanka. Both my parents were working for the government. We were a lower-middle-class family, which moved to upper-middle-class when my parents progressed their careers.
Two interesting facts on my family and household
- I grew up in a feminist household when feminism wasn’t even a thing in Sri Lanka. But my parents were ahead of their time. They both worked, took turns looking after me, and cooked and did household chores. People were surprised to hear my father cooked. He was often the only father in my parents-teacher meetings.
- I am an only child. My parents had few miscarriages before me. So I was considered a miracle child.
I did both my bachelors and masters in computer science in Sri Lanka. After working for 2 years there, I moved to the UK with my husband. We are both Software Engineers.
Given the support of my employer, my move to the UK was smooth. However, there were a lot of gotchas I wasn’t expecting when I started living here. This is the reason that I wanted to start writing about my experience living in the UK as an expat. I first had the idea in 2018, the year I moved. However, it took three years and one pandemic to get my stuff together and start writing.
