first day out.

open the gates.

i can not express

the blessing that lies within seeing

the trees blurring past,

the sky’s blue sea adorned with her clouds,

and the smiles of my loved ones —

all at once.

as one chapter closes behind me

in the rear view

I had been incarcerated for nearly nine years and, for me, writing and journaling were ways to cope with the endless feelings of regret, guilt, and depression that come with being in prison. It helped me to reconnect with those lost and innocent aspects of myself that I had once thought irretrievable.

I hope to share these thoughts and poems with you — many of which are actually from old journals that I kept while away.

I’m not a “writer” in the traditional sense of the word but I love to write. Always have. I have no notches on my belt, all this is new to me. Even so, writing is what I love to do.

What I write, what I express, what I share is about the only thing I truly have left to give…myself:

all my ups and downs in life

my mental health

how prison helped to reshape me after it initially nearly broke me

the importance behind having the love and support of family

the kindness that could be found in the unlikeliest of characters behind those bars

the easily overlooked blessings that can be found in each day

the shortness of life and just how much of it we take for granted.

Life is beautifully maddening and maddeningly beautiful if we could just open our eyes.

I share this with you all with the hope that you will somehow be able to relate and maybe even find a little guidance and maybe even experience the “comfort”(?) that comes with someone opening up about their pains and triumphs. I believe we should all strive to be at least a little vulnerable because our stories, our testimonies just might reach out to the right people.

I also hope to improve my writing and make it more captivating because it’s always been a dream of mine to publish a collection of poetry one day.

I’ve chosen to remain anonymous so that I can write freely and also because I’m just super shy and easily embarrassed 😋.

I’m new to Medium but it’s my goal to post 3 poems every Sunday and I’m definitely open to constructive criticism!

Thank you all so much for your time!!
