When you entered Canada, the immigration officer will greet you like: Hello, bonjour. Then will ask you: English or French? I doubted a bit. Impatient the officer asked: Do you need a translator?

Ahm, no. Actually English or French n’est pas un probléme.

HOOOLA. This is Gladys. I am a trilingual Mexican living in Vancouver, B.C

My first language is Spanish. I have been learning English since kindergarten. I studied abroad in France, this is where I actually learned the language, in the university, I studied it.

When I studied abroad in France, travel in Europe, and by meeting foreigners in Mexico, I encountered some people who would ask, when they find out I am from Mexico.

This question, I remembered it made me mad. Spanish. In Mexico, we speak Spanish!

Now that I am living in Vancouver, a diverse city, I have Latin American friends with whom I naturally speak Spanish. But sometimes we have to make adjustments to our conversation because we could fall into speaking a different language.

Spanish may differ in accent, slang, and word sense from one LATAM country to another…
