They (whoever they are) say you are only as old as you feel, and if that’s the case, then sometimes I feel 17 other times, 80.

I was born during the Second World War in New Zealand. I ended up being the middle child — two older sisters and a younger brother and sister. I was born on the 30th of September, 9 months to the day from New Year’s Eve and I suppose my parents had enjoyed a great New Year’s Eve party and I was the result of an inebriated coupling.

I moved to Canada in 1969 where three years later I met and married the love of my life. We have been married for almost 54 years, and have three adult children and four grandchildren. As my kids were itinerant travellers and took a while to settle down and start families of their own, I doubt very much if I will graduate to great-grandfather status. Unless of course, I live to the grand old age of 100 or more.

I love my kids and am very proud of them for their various achievements, both scholarly and for their chosen professions. I love my grandchildren to death, two boys and two girls, each of them having very different personalities and each having much to offer their indulgent…
