My spirit animal, Sam Shakusky

“The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be.” — Socrates

The Story

Funny story, the most important moment of my life was winning a charity dodgeball tournament.

Until the confetti fell, until I found myself kneeling with my best friends and younger brother, donning cardboard Burger King crowns, holding up my index finger to reiterate our victory and what we had become, even if only for a day, I always thought that I would be a red-ribbon man.

I’m painfully competitive, I always managed to make things interesting, at the end I was always one of the ones, just never the one.

After getting crushed in our first tournament, serving as a ladder for bigger boys to realize their destinies, then coming in second the following year to a pack of gorillas (they cheated, I swear), the only sport I ever excelled at seemed to mock me with the middle podium.

It was my last year of high school, and the friends that felt more like family had committed to universities that would effectively remove them from my life. Flying so close to the sun was damningly tantalizing, I had to touch the solar surface this time, or I would reside in the vacuum of zero gravity with zero chance of redemption.
